The goal is to reduce the electromagnetic field strength around a piece of equipment or a person.
Electric and magnetic fields are produced by different sources, and their strengths vary at various times and locations. The strength of an electric field is related to voltage, while the strength of a magnetic field is based on current.

Keeping your distance from sources is the easiest way to reduce EMF exposure. EMF meters are available to identify problem areas, as well as help you determine the best distance to keep from a source. Using corded headsets when talking on the phone, or a speakerphone for laptops can also reduce exposure. Keeping electronic devices turned off when not in use or in airplane mode is another easy way to lower EMF exposure.
Shielding fabric can be used to line hats and clothing, drape over beds, or cover windows and walls. This will soften the EMF signal, but not block it completely. Switching electronics on and off with switches, or utilizing timers to turn off the source while sleeping can also decrease exposure. Lastly, EMI shielding enclosures made of conductive materials like copper and silver can be effective in some situations. These enclosures must be completely encapsulated, however, as gaps in the material can allow interference to re-radiate into an area.
